Dragon Post – a book with retractable letters

Dragon Post

Dragon Post is on the AllThingsMomSydney Christmas wish list. It’s so cool! I’m not sure books like this were around when I was a child, I wish they had been.

The book comes with letters written to the main character which the kids can take out and read themselves.

What do you do when you discover a dragon and don’t know what to do with him? You have to write to the experts.  This book comes with 5 of these URGENT letters to open. How exciting!

This post will touch on the plot, just a bit so as not to spoil it, the illustrations and age suitability.

The Plot

“One day I found a dragon…”

And what on earth do you do when you find a dragon.

The little hero of this book, Alex, has found a dragon and he is desperate to keep him. Over the course of the book he writes letters to people who he thinks would know.

Thankfully, he gets letters in reply with some wonderful suggestions.

The Letters

Each of the letters that Alex gets back are folded into envelopes in the book. Your child can open up the letters and read the advice, straight from the letter writers.

There are five letters with different suggestions for Alex to try.

The letters are dotted throughout the book and each letter is in it’s own envelop which is different to the others. There is even one which has bite marks out of it because a tiger got hold of it. My littlest who is 3 was very confused about the bite marks, she thinks they’re real.

The Illustrations

When you’re reading to kids, as much of the experience is about the pictures. The illustrations can really determine the tone of the book and how it is received. This book is so bright and colourful, the colours used just draw you to it immediately! It’s really an engaging book that you can’t but help reading.

And the quality of the book itself – it is the best quality – from the pages to the individual letters. If you look after it, it could be one of those books your children pass on to their own.

Dragon Post! was first published this year and is definitely one to keep an eye out for. It would make an awesome Christmas present.

Age Suitability

My kids both love this book. I primarily wanted this book for my son, who is six and he has loved it! My daughter also loves this book and it makes her imagination run wild. Can you imagine, if it’s possible to find a dragon at home, what else could you stumble across!?

It can be a long book if you read all the letters at the same time.

You can read the book as a bedtime story, without the letters it’s not that long but with the letters it does get on the long-ish side. It may not be the wisest book to read before bed if you want to have a quick turn around. It also makes my kids talk non-stop, they want to natter about Alex’s dinosaur all night long.
